ZZZ Aria: The Adorable Charm of the Intelligent Construct Girl
Gilded Carrot Day has provided all Proxies in Zenless Zone Zero with an unforgettable New Year experience. Presumably, everyone has claimed all the rewards! The members of the Angels of Delusion truly shone in this version's storyline. Today, let's take a look at the design ingenuity behind the main vocalist, the little angel "Aria", who possesses two forms and double the cuteness.
1. Every version of "Aria" is lovely!
Each child of the Angels of Delusion is unique, and every member has a distinct feel that sets them apart from the other two. When it comes to Aria, one must definitely notice her projection form switching. As the first agent with dual character art since Ye Shunguang, Aria's adorable contrast is vividly displayed even in her artwork. Her idol human form is the stage Aria presents to the world; the action of her "masked leap" showcases all her confidence. Her lively expression, with an energetic peace sign and a wink, perfectly fits the standard model of idol performance—confident and radiant, seemingly flawless, undoubtedly aligning with the aesthetic of Japanese underground idols and virtual idols.
Her Intelligent Construct form, however, shifts from being open to extremely reserved, with a face full of uneasy worry. It's actually hard to associate this with a combat robot. From the initial artwork, we can see Aria's slight reliance on her perfect front-stage image and her lack of confidence in her true self. The subsequent story indeed develops from this.

Aria's idol form is surprisingly highly symmetrical, a rare touch of neatness. The primary color palette of pink, white, and cyan fits the sweet aesthetic of a girl idol. In battle, accents of purple neon light, representing the Ether attribute, subtly hint at a cyberpunk feel. Another key concept extractable from Aria is "fluffy," which gives a soft, squishy feeling, contrasting with the hardness of a mechanical construct. Her pink twin-tails emphasize this fluffiness, and paired with her small face, it actually inherits the rounded characteristics of the construct.

The main piece of her outfit is a puff-sleeved tiered skirt, also known as a layered skirt or cake skirt. The skirt has layered, complex tiers resembling a cake, creating a cascading, wavy effect with each tier. This style inherently conveys a sense of opulence and accentuates a certain rhythm, making it a common choice for idol outfits. Layer upon layer, as it moves and expands, creates a unique fluffiness. Like Sunna, Aria's entire outfit is covered in an abundance of bow elements. This kawaii style accentuates the girl's delicate sense of refinement. Aren't the two sides of a bow also akin to another form of wings?

The most eye-catching decorations on both sides of Aria's skirt are cyan mech-like external attachments. I wonder if any Proxies are particularly fond of Aria's eyes. The dazzling, sparkling iridescence blooming in her eyes evokes the fantastic style of a millennium future. Returning to the construct form, Aria instantly becomes asymmetrical, with an entire leg replaced with pink. The smaller bows present in her idol form are all absent. Even in her robot form, Aria's arms retain the sleeve parts, at first glance resembling a maid's outfit.
Why do we find Aria's construct as adorable as her idol form? The familiar baby schema effect is at play. The construct form's large eyes, rounded limbs, and enlarged decorations all subtly amplify this effect.

Of course, don't just focus on the cuteness. As a combat-type mecha, the hidden weapons are not to be underestimated. In battle, Aria has a headbutt action, which is powered by the forehead protector component on her head. The widely discussed "butt slam" is actually a versatile weapon—the circular blade on her back that descends like a guillotine. Even the sharp circular blade in combat, and the phantom bow used for shooting arrows, can also serve as assistants holding glow sticks to practice dancing.

In short, I absolutely adore these two forms. Aria is equally stunning in both forms!
2. Zenless Zone Zero Aria - Core Essence
After discussing the visual design, let's look at the richly referential core essence. "Aria" actually carries a dual meaning pointing to both music and internal monologue. Its core meaning is "Aria," a solo passage in opera or musicals typically used to express a character's inner emotions, making it the most emotionally charged form of internal monologue in music.
In the story, the exploration, confrontation, and resolution of Aria's confusion and conflict also revolve around her inner world. Simultaneously, in Italian, it also carries the meaning of "Air Melody," corresponding to her traits of being a holographic projection, intangible, and virtual.

I wonder if you've noticed that Aria's exclusive W-Engine, "Angel in the Shell," can bring to mind another legendary series—"Ghost in the Shell." The concepts of "Shell" and "Spirit" refer to the human body and consciousness. The "Shell" is the container of the physical body; parts of the human body can be mechanized or replaced, becoming the external vessel. In a cyberpunk context, the human spirit, consciousness, including memories and emotions, can be digitized and stored in the network, thus transferred into different "Shells."

When the "shell" is separated, what becomes the core that defines a person? This concept originates from the philosophical and psychological work "Ghost in the Machine" published by Arthur Koestler in 1967. The theme critiques the philosopher Descartes. Applied to Aria, it reflects her confusion between her "shell" as a combat robot and her "soul" that yearns for beauty and the singing stage.
Aria's persistent anxiety about whether she is a replica, a defective product, unworthy of beauty and happiness directly addresses the core exploration of cyberpunk's origins. Seeing Mindscape 5 even pays direct homage to the classic monologue from Blade Runner in the rain—"I once saw a city swallowed by the Hollows, its order reshaped by Ether. Everything beautiful was consumed by darkness, sinking into the long river of time... like tears fading in the rain."

A true idol is one who brings dreams and hope. Aria's story once again shows us the transmission of beautiful things. A mass-produced construct, once used as a tool for combat, encountered the most beautiful language transcending species through a piece of music, which became the "wake-up call" in her heart. For us, a wake-up call might be the reluctance to face the day; but for Aria, it was the beginning of a completely new stage of life, utterly different from her past.
After being healed by music, she also wanted to become an angel who brings beauty to others. In New Eridu, whether human or construct, one's life value doesn't depend on origin or background, but on one's own choices. Her "delusion" isn't something false, but the courage to dare to dream and still choose beauty even from a dark origin. Although the exploration of free will is somewhat surface-level, from the determined look on Aria's face, we can still see her will to adhere to her own choices.

The Version 2.6 storyline in Zenless Zone Zerois genuinely great! Finally, I wish everyone gets Aria, adding the "second pair of wings" to your collection, and hope everyone can bring the "Angels of Delusion" home completely.
