Zenless Zone Zero Trigger: Cold-Blooded yet Gentle Sniper

by ZZZLucien 07 Apr 2025

With just a light pull of the trigger, enemies can be eliminated from extreme distances. Today, the Zenless Zone Zero character we're analyzing is: Trigger. With the new version's launch, the ultimate Stun position candidate, "Trigger," has arrived. I'm sure many Proxies have rolled for her, but do you want to know more about her lore details? Let's find out together!

1. Zenless Zone Zero Trigger's Faction Details

As a key member of the previously mysterious Obol Squad, let's start with the faction logo. The logo features three English terms: New Eridu Defense Force, Obsidian Division, and Obol Squad.

The "Obal" in "Obol Squad" originally refers to a small-denomination coin used in ancient Greece. In Greek and Roman funerals, an Obal was often placed on the eyes or mouth of the deceased as payment to Charon, the ferryman of the River Styx on the journey to the afterlife. Charon is also a name that has appeared in PVs and the story, which we'll discuss later.

Since Obol is an ancient coin, the logo's overall design naturally follows the aesthetic of ancient currency. The lantern imagery typically symbolizes guidance, exploration, and hope in darkness-all of which seem to align with the original purpose of Obol Squad's establishment.

The lines flanking the lantern could be interpreted as a halo of light, but don't overlook the ferry and River Styx elements; they might also represent a simplified silhouette of such a boat. The pattern beneath the lantern depicts rippling water, which could alternatively be seen as eagle wings, a common military emblem. This logo is ingeniously designed in both form and symbolism.

2. The Meaning behind the name "Trigger"

"Trigger" is her codename. Previously, she had another codename: "Phlegethon." Phlegethon originally refers to the River of Fire, one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. Her four teammates' codenames correspond to the remaining four rivers: "Acheron, Lethe, Styx, and Cocytus"-representing the Rivers of Pain, Oblivion, Hatred, and Lamentation respectively. Their leader's codename is Charon, the ferryman of the Styx mentioned earlier.

Obol Squad Members

Their squad was originally named Lyra Squad, derived from the lyre (a musical instrument). But it seems the name Obol Squad better matches the essence of their codenames.

3. What does Trigger's appearance design look like?

Let's continue examining Trigger's design: Her goggles are exceptionally large, resembling the visor of a fighter pilot helmet. This similarity isn't just visual-they share functional parallels. When holding the normal attack button to enter a crouched sniping stance, the swaying aiming UI on the screen strongly evokes the feel of a fighter jet's heads-up display (HUD).

Moreover, the goggles assist Trigger in detecting incoming attacks. During character demonstrations, after an enemy fires an RPG, the goggles immediately flash red before Trigger reacts. This makes me suspect the goggles might even have voice alert functionality.

Looking at Trigger's clothing, the sleeves have a Renaissance-era retro style, while camouflage print has been added to align with her military identity.

The yellow cloak on her body appears to be an artistically modified version of a tactical cloak. The hooded cap design also enhances the fashionable aesthetic.

To incorporate rugged elements, the art team designed her bulletproof vest as a rigid shell. Combined with the trigger-shaped metal ornament on her chest, these elements create a visual similarity to grenades.

Looking further down, Trigger has four pistol-like weapons at her waist. Beyond their offensive capabilities, they utilize recoil to assist Trigger in rapid movement.

4. Trigger's Weapon Design - "Phlegethon"

Trigger's electromagnetic sniper rifle is particularly interesting. Its integrated modular detachable design shares similarities with Zhu Yuan's weapon. When disassembled, the lower receiver can function as a standalone pistol, while the upper receiver combined with the blade serves as a machete.

Trigger's Weapon-Phlegethon

I suspect the designers omitted the conventional bayonet design to preserve Trigger's gentle image. When assembled, the upper receiver transforms into an electromagnetic acceleration rail, enhancing pistol bullets to sniper rifle-level power.

Here's a subtle detail you might have missed: This sniper rifle lacks a traditional scope, as the aiming functionality has been integrated into her goggles. So how does it hit targets? As I mentioned earlier, the goggles resemble fighter jet systems-the bullets are also visually trackable.

That's all for today's "Trigger" character appreciation. I wonder if reading this analysis has deepened your understanding of her. If you really like Trigger as a character, be sure to stay tuned. We'll be publishing many articles about her soon, and don't miss out on Zenless Zone Zero merchandise!
